June 4, 1968

Everyone but me had left the dorm for the summer, and I liked being alone in the house at 913 West Franklin. The only other person I knew still on campus was the overnight switchboard operator, who listened to the radio in the little glass room that used to be a conservatory, in the Ad. Building, former residence of the Ginters.
I am a sound sleeper, and it took a long time for the hall phone to wake me late that night. All Rick said was "They shot Kennedy. Bring your tv."
I put on shorts and a tshirt, picked up the small black and white tv from the parlor, and walked barefoot to the end of the block. Walter Cronkite came on wearing no makeup - he has a lot of freckles - and we watched the tape for the first time.
